NITI Aayog released two landmark reports under its Services Thematic Series, providing the first in-depth assessment of India’s services sector through the lenses of output and employment. The reports — “India’s Services Sector: Insights from GVA and State-Level Dynamics” and “India’s Services Sector: Insights from Employment Trends and State-Level Dynamics” — were launched by CEO Shri B.V.R. Subrahmanyam in the presence of Member Dr. Arvind Virmani and Chief Economic Adviser Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran.
The studies reveal that the services sector contributed nearly 55% to India’s GVA in 2024–25, with evidence of regionally balanced growth as lagging states begin catching up. They recommend boosting digital infrastructure, innovation, logistics, finance, and skilling to sustain competitiveness.
The employment report highlights both the modern, high-productivity segments and traditional, informal sectors of services. It calls for policies focused on formalisation, inclusion, gender equality, skilling, and regional balance to drive high-quality job creation.
Together, the reports chart a roadmap for leveraging India’s services sector as a key driver of inclusive growth and employment in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
