Schaeffler India, a leading motion technology company, has been awarded the CII National Award for Excellence in Water Management 2024–25 for its flagship CSR initiative, Jal Samruddhi, under the “Beyond the Fence” category. The honour recognises impactful community-focused efforts that enhance water security, strengthen livelihoods and support sustainable development at the watershed level.
Presented annually by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the award is among India’s most prestigious recognitions for excellence in water stewardship and community-driven sustainability initiatives.
Implemented in partnership with BAIF Development Research Foundation, Schaeffler India’s Jal Samruddhi project has significantly improved water availability and agricultural productivity in the water-scarce villages of Wakalwadi and Gosasi in Pune district. The project, carried out between July 2021 and December 2023, adopted an integrated watershed management approach to address chronic water shortages and livelihood challenges.
Key outcomes of the initiative include:
Creation of 143,000 cubic metres of water conservation potential through trenches, recharge ponds, gabions and boulder structures
Treatment of 1,268 acres of land to reduce soil erosion and enhance moisture retention
40% rise in cropping intensity and notable improvement in yields
84% of households reporting better water access
Average household income rising from Rs 60,312 to Rs 1,06,938
70% reduction in dependence on tanker water
The initiative has benefited more than 400 rural families, improving water security, boosting farm productivity and enhancing overall quality of life through soil and water conservation, micro-irrigation support and sustainable farming practices.
Shibi Mathew, Head of HR and CSR, Schaeffler India, said,
“We are honoured to receive the CII National Award for Excellence in Water Management. Water security is fundamental to building resilient communities. Jal Samruddhi reflects our commitment to meaningful change through science-led watershed development and sustained community engagement.”
The impact of Jal Samruddhi has been independently validated by Sattva Consulting, establishing it as a scalable and replicable model aligned with several UN Sustainable Development Goals. Schaeffler India is now extending this approach to its CSR focus areas in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, further strengthening its commitment to community development and environmental sustainability.
