Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) has achieved a major milestone by installing 1 crore electricity smart meters across distribution companies (discoms), becoming the first company in India — and possibly globally — to reach this scale of deployment. The company now aims to deliver the next 1 crore meters in the coming financial year.
As an Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP), AESL holds a mandate to install nearly 2.5 crore smart meters across five states. With an installation pace of around 25,000 meters per day, the company said it currently leads the industry in deployment speed.
The milestone has been achieved well ahead of its earlier guidance of reaching the 1 crore mark by March 31, 2026. The rollout supports India’s nationwide smart metering drive under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), aimed at modernizing power distribution and improving operational efficiency.
AESL said its smart meter network provides real-time consumption insights, enhances billing transparency, reduces losses, and strengthens grid reliability for utilities and consumers.
CEO Kandarp Patel noted that the achievement reflects strong execution capabilities and deep collaboration with utilities and consumers, adding that smart meters act as catalysts for digital transformation and efficient energy management.
To accelerate deployment, the company has adopted an integrated ecosystem approach, partnering with group firms for smart metering technology, local data hosting, and logistics support, while also training technicians through its CSR initiatives.
AESL began its smart metering journey in 2024 and completed the 1 crore installations in nearly 24 months — marking one of the fastest large-scale deployments in the country. Under RDSS, India plans to replace around 25 crore conventional meters with smart meters to improve billing accuracy, demand forecasting, renewable integration, and overall grid efficiency.
