The Government of India has announced a series of Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms aimed at empowering the youth, promoting healthier lifestyles, and improving overall ease of living. The measures align with initiatives such as the Fit India Movement and efforts to strengthen youth-focused infrastructure and mobility.
A key reform is the reduction of GST on gyms and fitness centres from 18% to 5%, making quality fitness facilities more affordable and encouraging wider participation in preventive healthcare and fitness activities. Similarly, the cut in GST on bicycles and parts from 12% to 5% will promote eco-friendly transport and make cycling more accessible to students, professionals, and fitness enthusiasts.
In the sports sector, GST on toys and sports goods has been reduced from 12% to 5%, enabling easier access to sports equipment and encouraging more youth participation in indoor and outdoor games, thereby strengthening India’s sporting culture.
Mobility-related reforms include a GST reduction on two-wheelers up to 350cc, including commuter bikes, from 28% to 18%, easing ownership costs for students, young professionals, and gig workers. Small cars will also become more affordable with the GST rate cut from 28% to 18%, supporting first-time buyers and young families.
Together, these reforms reflect the government’s vision of building a fit, mobile, and empowered young India while driving inclusive growth and expanding opportunities across society.
