Adani Power Ltd. (APL), India’s largest private sector thermal power producer, has secured a total capacity of 1,600 MW from MP Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) under a recently concluded tender. The company received a Letter of Award (LoA) for an additional 800 MW under the ‘Greenshoe Option,’ after earlier winning 800 MW capacity in the same bidding process.
This is the fifth major power supply order APL has received in the past 12 months, taking its total awarded capacity to 7,200 MW. The additional 800 MW will be supplied at the same tariff of Rs 5.838 per kWh as the previously awarded capacity. APL will supply power from a new 1,600 MW (2x800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal power plant to be set up under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model in Anuppur district, Madhya Pradesh. Both units are planned to be commissioned within 60 months of the appointed date, with the company investing about Rs 21,000 crore in the plant and associated infrastructure.
This marks the first adoption of the greenshoe option in a thermal power tender in India. The inclusion of this mechanism in coal-based power procurement will help Madhya Pradesh meet its growing electricity demand driven by rapid industrialisation and urbanisation, thereby enhancing energy security for the state.
“We are delighted that Adani Power has not only secured the initial 800 MW project in Madhya Pradesh but has also been awarded an additional 800 MW under the greenshoe option. This reinforces our commitment to providing reliable, affordable and sustainable power to the state and its people,” said Mr. S.B. Khyalia, Chief Executive Officer, Adani Power.
The coal linkage for the project has been allocated under the Government of India’s SHAKTI Policy. The project is expected to generate around 9,000–10,000 jobs during the construction phase and about 2,000 once operational. The company expects to sign the Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with the state’s distribution company soon.
Adani Power has been actively expanding its portfolio. In September 2024, it, along with Adani Green Energy, received the LoI for a composite 6,600 MW order (5,000 MW solar and 1,600 MW thermal) from Maharashtra. In May 2025, it received an LoA from the Uttar Pradesh government for 1,600 MW power from a greenfield plant. In August 2025, it bagged an LoA from Bihar for 2,400 MW, and last month, it received 800 MW from Madhya Pradesh, which has now been doubled to 1,600 MW following the greenshoe option.
Adani Power is implementing India’s largest private sector capex programme to address growing base-load demand. The company currently operates 18.15 GW across 12 thermal power plants and aims to scale up its total generation capacity to 41.87 GW by 2031–32.
